This little patch of English grass on some wave-swept rocks off the coast of France has enjoyed centuries of prosperity – interrupted by a few invasions – by virtue of its position between Britain and Europe

The flight was now 20 minutes late, and the gentleman with the south Dublin accent was very angry. Yes, I silently agreed, it was ridiculous that there was no water on board. Yes, I’m sure the captain would like to interrupt his pre-flight checks to tell you the same thing as the flight attendant did a quarter of an hour ago.
