Is ‘toxicity’ charging worth thinking about?

With the introduction of the toxicity charge in London already raising awareness of emissions among motorists and the industry alike, perhaps it’s time Ireland follows suit

Earlier this week, the so-called ‘T-Charge’ (short for toxicity charge, though it’s officially the Emissions Surcharge) came into force in London, meaning that owners of older, more polluting vehicles who want to drive right into the centre of the city now face paying an additional £10 (approximately €11.25) on top of the existing £11.50 Congestion Charge (approximately €13), per day. That sends a very clear message to motorists and the motor industry: London wants cleaner air. Some are wondering if the same should be applied to Dublin and perhaps all our cities in time.
