Some time ago, when researching a novel, I visited a famous school in Munster where a real-life character in my novel once studied. Its staff could not have been more helpful in painstakingly examining old records. But their demeanour changed rapidly when I expressed a desire to – just once – walk across a deserted playing pitch that I could see through the window, so I could stand where my character had stood. They explained that this was forbidden: it contravened their health and safety policy, negating their insurance if I tripped while walking out to the grass.
