When Britain joined the then EEC in 1973, its giant sugar industry became Europe’s sugar interests. Ireland, Spain and many other European states produced their own sugar, from vast beet farming regions such as Carlow and Tipperary in Ireland, and in Spain all along the remote Ribera del Duero region.
