Justin Cartwright’s fiction often overlaps with his life, and South Africa, where he was born and grew up, plays a key part in many of his novels. Though set in London, the Booker-shortlisted In Every Face I Meet is backdropped by Nelson Mandela’s imminent release and in White Lightning, shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel Award, an ex-pat returns to South Africa to be with his dying mother.
