Montreal: the second-largest French-speaking city in the world

Montreal’s most famous son, Leonard Cohen, liked to wander its atmospheric streets in his slippers - and who could blame him, writes Isabel Conway

If nothing else, visitors to Montreal are unlikely to go hungry. Canada’s second-largest city has no fewer than 5,846 restaurants, the highest concentration in North America after New York. “We spend the majority of our incomes in restaurants and bars,” says city guide Thom Seivewright, “and only good restaurants survive.”
