The Sunday Business Post / Penguin Ireland Short Story Award 2017

Entry to The Sunday Business Post Magazine/ Penguin Ireland Short Story Award is now open

Perhaps you have a story that has yet to see light, or an idea waiting to come to life?

The winning entry, plus two runners-up, will be announced at a ceremony in March 2018, with a €2,000 prize for the overall award; €500 for first runner-up, and €250 for the second runner-up.

Each awarded story will be published in The Sunday Business Post Magazine in 2018.

YOUR SHORT STORY

Once again, we are looking for compositions of up to 5,000 words to be judged by literary experts here at the paper and from leading publisher Penguin Ireland.

Entries can be sent by email toshortstory@sbpost.ie or posted to Short Story Prize, The Sunday Business Post, Hambleden House, 19-26 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2, Ireland.

Entries must be original short stories, in English, of 5,000 words or less. Any work that has been previously published or broadcast before December 18, 2017 will be disqualified.

The first page of each story must include the entrant’s first name, address, phone number and email address. Stories should be submitted in Times New Roman font (point size 12).

Entries must be received by 5pm on December 18, 2017. Please note that due to the volume of entries, we are not in a position to provide confirmation of entries on an individual basis.

Terms and conditions

Entrants – this competition is open to anyone aged 16 and over who is a resident or has citizenship of Ireland, except for employees of The Sunday Business Post and Penguin Ireland, their families and any other company connected with the competition. Only one entry per entrant will be accepted. Entries will be accepted until 5pm on Monday, December 18, 2017. The shortlisted entrants will be informed in March 2017.

Prizes

(a) €2,000 to the winning entrant

(b) €500 to second place

(c) €250 to third place

will be conferred by The Sunday Business Post in March 2017 (date TBC).

Copyright/ownership – entrants will own and retain any copyright in their entries.

Entry specifications – entrants are advised to retain a copy of entries as they will not be returned. Each entry must be:

(a) in English

(b) an original work of which the entrant is the author which has not been previously professionally or commercially published and is not in breach of any third-party right

Unacceptable entries – entries which are handwritten or submitted on a disk or flash drive will not be accepted.

Events – the promoter may, at its absolute discretion, vary, amend, suspend or withdraw the prizes with or without notice.

Judges – the judges’ decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into in relation to their decisions or the competition.

Winning entrant – the winning entrants grant The Sunday Business Post all relevant permissions in relation to the publication of material in The Sunday Business Post as well as on businesspost.ie and on The Sunday Business Post’s social media channels. The winning entrant [and runner-up] also agree[s] to the promoter’s use of his/her name[s] and photograph[s] in relation to publicity material. The Sunday Business Post and Penguin Ireland reserve the right to edit entries in respect of the above publication.

Data – personal details will only be retained and used by the promoter for the purposes of this competition and will be deleted thereafter. Personal details will not be passed on to third parties.
