Despite a testing year behind the glitz, cinema continues to retain its foothold in the public imagination. This year sees a fresh crop of compelling movies vying for your attention. John Maguire previews what’s coming

The vagaries of Oscars politics push many of Hollywood’s most prestigious releases to the end of the year, and the quirks of international distribution mean we get to see them a month or so later. Like every recent year, the films vying for awards season tend to fall into a few categories: star vehicles, literary adaptations, expensive fantasies and carefully-wrought historical dramas. Here, we list some of the most prominent films of the season, the movies likely to be collecting little gold men at the end of February.
