David Sedaris is an extremely funny man. Anyone who has listened to his wry, self-deprecating observations on BBC Radio 4 or NPR, or who has dipped into his bestselling books, can attest to this fact.

However, that’s not always obvious from this first collection of his diaries, which takes us from 1977, approaching his 21st birthday, up to 2002, when the hugely successful writer and broadcaster has just moved from Paris to London.
