Flamboyant, handsome, louche and openly gay, actor Rupert Everett has never been a stereotypical leading man but he has forged a successful parallel career as a writer. He has now created a memorable biopic of his hero Oscar Wilde’s years of exile. And he’s great company over breakfast.

Surrounded by cameras, toast crumbs and fancy cornicing, Rupert Everett is holding forth. “Life is struggle,” he says. “It’s like being a blade of grass growing between two concrete slabs. How does it happen? It struggles upwards. My creativity has always come from this struggle. When things have gone badly I’ve been forced to come up with something . . .”
