Off Message: Why do some tragedies attract more sympathy?

While 500 deaths by suicide in four years go largely unacknowledged by the wider community, there was a huge outpouring of grief over the events in Berkeley. So why is it that some tragedies seem to attract more sympathy and attention than others?
