If we’re going to beat 2018’s stresses, we have to find increasingly outlandish ways to relax. So brace yourself for bootcamp, llamas, surfing and a dose of Michael D’s dogs

Wealthy New Yorkers have a new favourite hobby, and it’s a particularly rustic yet lavish one. Instead of packing up their belongings and heading off in a cramped car for a long commute to go camping, Manhattanites now take an eight-minute ferry ride to Governors Island, in the heart of New York harbour, where they switch off phones, forget all thoughts of computer screens, and camp out for the weekend, occupying spectacular tents, in a location called Collective Retreats, that range in price from €220 to €650 per night. As the New Yorkers roast marshmallows, reconnect with family, play beanbag toss and look out at spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty and the twinkling lights of Manhattan: they achieve one other thing besides. Finally, they unwind.
