Pity the poor cold-caller. Even the most sociable of us do not want to talk to an anonymous representative of the companies we reluctantly deal with. But remember that they are human too

I’d consider myself a reasonably polite person. I like people and I’m usually happy to have a chat. I don’t usually mind talkative taxi drivers. I like a good natter in the hairdresser’s and I’m willing, within reason, to entertain most people who arrive on my doorstep, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Halloween trick-or-treaters and the occasional stray politician included. I interview artists for a living; I’m well up for tolerating a philosophical rant about all sorts of stuff.
