It’s official: stuffing our faces with sugar-infused fast food and treats is not what makes us fat. The causes are in fact having the wrong friends, taking antibiotics and wearing wax raincoats

Did you know that your raincoat is making you gain weight? I found myself saying this to a colleague the other day with an entirely straight face. I located the study I’d just uncovered, contained in one of the daily newspapers, and waved it at her with a triumphant air, which seemed entirely appropriate in the circumstances, given that the survey appeared to be the holy grail of blame-reapportioning. (To wit: it’s not our fault if we gain a few pounds; it’s our Paddington Bear attire in wet weather that’s snookering us.)
