The media business is becoming a cold house for cultural critics

Measured criticism is vital, but the art form is in grave danger. With its proponents often facing a barrage of abuse online and increasing pressure from so-called influencers, perhaps it’s time for reviewers to be more highly rated, rather than berated

Critics are important. It’s a small statement, perhaps, but it’s time people in the arts said it loudly and proudly. It needs to be said (even bellowed from the rooftops) because the role of the professional critic is fast disappearing, gradually being reduced in our culture until you wonder if soon it will not be a job at all, but a hazy, pointillist memory stemming from a happy time before the internet wore us all into a collection of ciphers, incapable of writing anything longer than 140 characters.
