The hysteria surrounding Imelda May’s decision to skip an English music festival to sing at the McGregor fight was as hair-raising as her former quiff

Did you hear it? Surely the collective groan of discontent was loud enough to make itself felt the length and breadth of the country, once the news had leaked, the bugle had been blown, the tweets twittered, and the Snapchats and Facebook comments uploaded. Imelda May, everyone’s favourite pop pin-up from the Liberties in Dublin, had done an unconscionable thing. She had jettisoned a festival gig she was supposed to be doing in Warwickshire last Saturday night to perform for an audience of millions in Las Vegas, singing Amhrán na bhFiann ahead of the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight.
