Frank O’Connor was not always a popular man in his home country. While WB Yeats and John F Kennedy were among the Cork writer’s fans, many of his books were banned here and the Irish Press dubbed him “an anti-Irish Irishman”. Patrick Kavanagh wrote a nasty essay called Coloured Balloons that accused him of dumbing down and becoming just another populist showman.
