It’s hard to keep up with Alexander McCall Smith. Few contemporary authors are as prolific as him. In the 1980s and 1990s, he published dozens of books, from children’s books to legal tomes, while also managing to hold down a prestigious academic day job – he is still Emeritus Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh. Since the publication of the phenomenally successful The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in 1998, which introduced the Botswanan detective Precious Ramotswe to the world, he’s produced over 40 novels.
