Most people want SUVs, not MPVs, but Mercedes’ new B-Class shows that the idea of a taller hatchback still has some mileage in it, writes Liam Shard

When Renault first launched the Espace in 1984, it seemed that we had entered a new, more rational, age of motoring. One where style (to an extent) gave way to practicality, where a car became less of an obvious status symbol and more of a motorised egg that maximised space for people and chattels.
