Mazda’s new hatchback is arguably the handsomest five-door around, and it’s as good to drive as it is to look at, writes Liam Shard

Six million sales since the first Mazda3 was launched in 2003, the Japanese car maker – a relative minnow compared to the might of Toyota – may just have stolen a lead from the newly launched Corolla. It’s not likely that the new 3 will outsell the Corolla. After all, Mazda is in 16th place in the Irish sales charts, while Toyota is usually at or close to the top. No, the new Mazda out-does the new Toyota in one specific way: its styling.
