A new adaptation of a John Le Carré novel is always a bit of an event. But then I’m a fan. Perhaps the best and most atmospheric television adaptation was in the 1970s. It saw Alec Guinness playing a convincing George Smiley in the BBC’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
