Even as a child, Muireann O’Connell was, by her own admission, ‘a very opinionated girl’. Now she’s taking over the Al Porter slot at Today FM, making her the only woman on prime-time radio at the station

When Muireann O’Connell wakes up tomorrow morning, she will be “terrified”. “Like 15 out of ten terrified,” she laughs down the phone line. We’re talking in the wake of her reveal as the new resident of the 12-2pm slot on Today FM, an appointment that has caused quite the ripple in the media pond. From tomorrow, O’Connell’s will be the sole female voice on air from 7am to 7pm at the national station, and that fact, in today’s beleaguered radio landscape, is a headline in itself.
