Long-lost Donizetti opera gets premiere

The world premiere of a newly-discovered opera by Gaetano Donizetti takes place in Covent Garden this Wednesday, July 18 – over 180 years after it was composed.

The lost work, L’Ange de Nisida (The Angel of Nisida), did not see the light of day in the composer’s own time, as he wrote it for a Paris theatre that went bankrupt before its premiere. A furious Donizetti described its management as “real donkeys”.
