David Hedderman’s drawings came to fruition quickly under intense conditions, and now they’re getting a well-deserved exhibition in Portobello in Dublin, writes Nadine O’Regan

In the brightly-lit surrounds of the Hang Tough Gallery in Dublin, David Hedderman is surveying one of his own drawings. I’ve asked Hedderman about his influences, but the Irish artist is less keen on talking about the names of specific painters than he is in discussing artistic themes and processes. There was a time when Hedderman would think through everything intensively – from his Berlin studio, he could spend seven years working on just one painting. “I’d layer and layer the painting,” he explains.
