When EastEnders came to Ireland to shoot three episodes in 1997, it kicked a hornet’s nest of indignation and injured pride, with viewers here outraged to see Irish characters portrayed as drunken, aggressive louts. It was a fiction, perhaps a stupidly offensive one, but a fiction for all that.
