The Man Jesus attempts to provide us with a sense of the human figure who transformed Western civilisation. Though never irreverent, Mathew Hurt’s script wisely resists a po-faced approach. This is signalled early when John, the half-brother of Jesus, sits their mother, the Blessed Virgin, down and implores her to accede to his request. “Do something that’s completely out of character, mother,” John urges, “and listen to me.”
