Dazzling dramas and boisterous blockbusters

John Maguire casts his eye over the comedies, thrillers and arthouse flicks that will be competing for cinemagoers’ eyeballs this summer

Time was that summer movies arrived in the summer, like sunburned necks and state exams. Now the blockbuster season stretches from March to September, as the studios jostle for elbow room in a shrinking marketplace. That goes double in a World Cup year, where global audiences are home watching telly and multiplexes are empty of big, noisy tentpoles. Into the gaps sneak smaller, quieter films that might otherwise struggle to score. Here’s my take on the films worth your time this summer.
