In my lexicon, the Aviation cocktail was always a grey evocation of the outside of 1930s metal bodied planes. But it seems I have been living a lie.

A real Aviation is violet-coloured, due to the use of crème de violette. However, the French liqueur became scarce before World War II and was substituted with Crème Yvette, giving a pungent cocktail which somewhat lacked colour.
