The premiere of Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No 7 occurred in Leningrad on this day, August 9, in 1942, during the 900-day siege of the city by the German Army which cost over one million lives. Hitler had suggested he would be banqueting in Leningrad by August 9. He wasn’t.
