The Bloody Mary, like so many of the greats in cocktail lore, is a product of 1920s Paris. There are at least five strong claims to its origin, and Ernest Hemingway is of course involved. Hemingway didn’t claim to have invented it; he merely wrote and detailed the true ingredients of the drink, which was also called a Red Snapper or Red Hammer.
