Vroom, vroom, vroom. Whether it’s the roar of motorbikes, bustling streets, noisy street food sellers or the coffee shops adorning every corner, there is something invigorating about Ho Chi Minh City, or what locals and expats call Saigon.

Our expectations for Vietnam had been tempered by a visit to Phu Quoc Island, our starting point, which lies about 50 kilometres off the south-west coast of the mainland.
