In 1970 in Hawaii, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of Bordeaux’s august Château Mouton-Rothschild, met Robert Mondavi, then the most famous winery owner in California’s Napa Valley. The two men got on well and decided that they would like to set up a winery together.
