Bertie Ahern was one of the prime movers in getting the Good Friday Agreement over the line. In a wide-ranging interview, the former taoiseach looks back at those heady days of 20 years ago

When Bertie Ahern goes to the North these days, he sees a different place to the one he had known in 1998.

“The tension is totally out of it. You can doddle around Belfast or Omagh or Strabane, as I did just a few weeks ago,” he says.

And the contrast is even more stark when the former taoiseach looks around at what is happening in his former Dublin Central constituency.
