The desert blues magnetism of Tinariwen continues to exert a strong pull on Elwan, their seventh album. Although the record has been released at a difficult time for members of the band – their Saharan homeland in west Africa has become a place of conflict, threatened by insurgents – there are only occasional traces of melodic unease running through these 13 powerfully executed tracks.
