Book review: Words wield the power over blinding violence in Rushdie’s Victory City

Salman Rushdie’s first book since he was blinded in one eye in a stabbing attack is a rip-roaring fantasy tale that emphasises the power of words

Salman Rushdie: Victory City is the author’s ninth novel since the life-changing fatwa was issued against him following the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses in 1988

Although Victory City’s manuscript had already been delivered to his publishers beforehand, it’s hard not to be reminded of the horrific attack which took place as Salman Rushdie was about to speak at a literary event last August. Stabbed repeatedly, he lost his sight in one eye – all because of his words.
