Picture a photograph of three men from south-west Donegal. There’s Mick O’Donnell in the white overalls he wears at Island Seafoods, the pelagic fish processing factory he founded 35 years ago and which today exports Killybegs-landed mackerel, horse mackerel, herring and sprat around the world.

There’s Dessie, his eldest son, in oilskins, a marine engineer who works for a local boat that fishes out of what is Ireland’s busiest port during the autumn-to-spring fishing season.
