Nearly two decades ago, Robert Sylvester Kelly, the R&B star known as R Kelly, sat down for an interview with MTV in which he tried to defend himself from allegations that he had sexually abused minors.

“I’m no angel, but I’m no monster either,” Kelly said in May 2002.
