In his budget speech last December, the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, announced that maternity benefit would be treated as taxable income from July 1 this year.

In his budget speech last December, the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, announced that maternity benefit would be treated as taxable income from July 1 this year.

The minister noted that this measure would "correct an anomaly so that women on maternity benefit will pay the same level of income tax as when they are working". The change will also apply to adoptive benefit and health and safety benefit.
