Last month it was revealed that the highest number of maths students ever sat the higher-level paper - 22.1 per cent compared to 15.8 per cent last year - a positive indicator that at least one initiative to increase the uptake of science and maths is working.
This was good news for a government that has identified STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at third level as a vital stepping-stone towards re-building the economy.
