Wine hike sparks off-licence rush and dire warnings

The €1 excise hike on a bottle of wine caused a rush on off-licences last night as well as warnings from the drinks industry that it would cost jobs in hotels, restaurants and bars already struggling with the recession.

Total employment in the drinks industry has already fallen by 40 per cent to about 60,000 since 2008, and sales in bars and pubs have fallen by at least 35 per cent, according to the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.
