Hidden in plain sight in Provence are the vineyards that produce southern France's most exclusive wines, writes Tomás Clancy.

Provence, in its "warm, musky cloak of heather and lavender".

The clarity of its light drew Picasso, Cézanne and Van Gogh to its deep blue skies, while the decadence of its Beau Monde, billionaire lifestyle drew F Scott Fitzgerald, Jean Paul Getty and the Rolling Stones.

Today, its names - St Tropez, Monte Carlo, Nice, Marseilles and Cannes - draw in enough visitors to make Fáilte Ireland bury its head under the pillow.
