Facebook, Google and Amazon have been splashing billions out on new acquisitions and the battle to stay ahead of the curve means the spending won't stop there.

In the space of a couple of months, Facebook has spent more than $20 billion on just a couple of companies in a shopping spree unlike any other. The ink had barely dried on the social network's $19 billion deal to take over WhatsApp when Facebook signed a $2 billion cheque to buy virtual reality pioneer Oculus VR.

Not that Facebook has been alone on the acquisition trail, with firms such as Google and Amazon also shelling out...
