There has been huge growth in the number of private nursing homes in Ireland on the back of generous tax breaks. There are 411 private nursing homes and a further 50 voluntary operators. Nursing home chains have mushroomed and international players have entered the Irish market.

Barchester, which is backed by Dermot Desmond, JP McManus and John Magnier, has opened a retirement village called Knightsbridge in Trim.
