Wheels coming off the Tesco juggernaut

Tesco's new chief executive will struggle to turn around a supermarket giant that faces tough competition from discounters, writes Ian Guider.

In Ireland, Tesco's market share stands at 25.2 per cent, only just ahead of SuperValu. It could fall from the top spot this month.

It’s early evening midweek and shoppers entering Tesco’s supermarket in the Bloomfield shopping centre in Dun Laoghaire are greeted with special offers in advance of Halloween.

There’s also a display selling vegetables at a knock-down rate. The supermarket sells everything in Tesco’s range, from its F&F clothing brand to electronics, toys, books and video games. The food aisles and its meat and deli counter are tucked away at the back of the store.
