The government is laying the groundwork for painful social welfare cuts in the €6 billion budget in ongoing discussions with Fianna Fáil backbenchers.

Cuts in social welfare payments of 5-8 per cent are under discussion at cabinet. This would indicate a cut of at least €1 0 on weekly welfare payments, and between €7.50 and €12 in monthly child benefit payments.
