Garda powers introduced in the wake of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin, allowing drug-crime suspects to be detained for up to seven days, are to be made permanent.

As part of a new Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill to be introduced by justice minister Dermot Ahern early in the new year, the present requirement for ministers for justice to seek Oireachtas and cabinet approval to renew the detention powers will end.
