We will have to pay consultants more

Ireland does have some of the best-paid hospital consultants in this world.

A fuss erupted in April 2007 when the head of the Irish Hospital Consultants’ Association, Josh Keaveny, was widely reported to have described a consultant’s salary of €205,000 as “Mickey Mouse” money.

Keaveny, an anaesthetist at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, said doctors were being lured to the US where they could earn $500,000. Although he later claimed to have been misquoted, the damage was done.
