By far the best book I read all year was Down and Dirty Pictures (Simon and Schuster), Peter Biskind's encyclopaedic and riveting study of US independent cinema.
Biskind's last book, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, was a gleeful muckraking of the cocaine-fuelled war crimes of Hollywood's 1970smavericks - the Coppolas, the Scorseses, the Friedkins. For this one, he turned his gaze upon the (almost exclusively) men who revolutionised the independent American film industry in the 1980s...
