Victim of garda assault takes action against state

The state has been served with proceedings by solicitors acting for a man whose allegation of police brutality resulted in convictions for three gardaí last year.

The state has been served with proceedings by solicitors acting for a man whose allegation of police brutality resulted in three serving gardaí receiving criminal convictions last year.

The action is being brought by Anthony Holness, whose evidence was central to an investigation carried out by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC). That investigation led to the first assault conviction of members of the force since the GSOC was established.
