Gardai­ are finally to be given the powers to carry out US-style roadside tests for drugs. These tests include asking motorists to walk in a straight line, to touch their nose, and to stand on one leg.

A variety of tests to detect if a driver is under the influence of drugs was introduced in legislation three years ago. But they were found to be out of date, and were never actually used.
